Humanitarian Trips

We are preparing for our 2023 humanitarian trip to Nicaragua. It is people like you that allow us to deliver supplies and services, as well as goodwill to these wonderful people. Over the past fifteen years, we have done over 30 humanitarian trips with hundreds of volunteers. We also have had university interns from various academic institutions spend hundreds of combined hours developing and improving upon programs related to business development, education, health, and physical well-being, among many others. Our volunteers change lives and we appreciate your interest in this project.

Dates of travel: JUNE 2-10**

THE TRIP: The trip is a total of 8 days (there are opportunities to extend and spend time of various tourist locations on the beaches and other areas)

TRIP OUTLINE:

4 days of humanitarian work east of Leon, where we will deliver supplies and work on projects that will benefit the community near the small village of La Calle Real. We will also participate in activities with the children in the elementary and high schools. Our community center in the village was completed five years ago is now a hub of classes related to developing self-reliance, learning English, starting and growing a business, school for special needs kids, and fostering literacy, among many others. We anticipate lots of work alongside community members on these and other projects, depending on your interest and expertise. For those wanting more experience with the language, our local community-run Spanish immersion program would be an option as part of the humanitarian work.

1 day getting settled, activities around Leon, touring markets, cathedrals, and historical sites.

1 day local sightseeing activity at Las Peñitas beach, which has surfing, kayaking in the nearby lagoon to Juan Venado Island Nature Reserve, turtle sanctuary. (Optional boat ride to Juan Venado Island Nature Reserve.)

1 day split between sightseeing activities at local volcanos and markets AND community interactive activity. (activities like volcano surfing are available and would be an additional expense)

2 days of travel (one day for each way)

**If you wish to extend your trip longer to visit other interesting places such as OmeTepe Island, San Juan Del Sur, Mombacho Volcano NP, Miraflor Natural Reserve, and Corn Islands, or if you would enjoy a little extra time for R&R on the beautiful beaches of Nicaragua, let us know and we can help you arrange for a personal driver and guide.

COST:

The cost is $1250 per person (double occupancy) for the trip. This includes accommodations (all rooms have air conditioning and hot water), ground transportation, breakfast and dinner, and excursions to the beach, markets, and volcano hot pots. (More primitive accommodations are available (at a reduced cost) in the village for those interested in that experience.) VERY IMPORTANT: THE COST DOES NOT INCLUDE AIRFARE. There are many airfare options and in the past several of our volunteers have chosen to use miles to get to Nicaragua. We are also happy to coordinate airfare for you, with the benefit being that you pay us the cost of the ticket, and then get the tax deduction. The most important thing is that we will coordinate arrival in Nicaragua on the same day and around the same time so as not to incur additional ground transportation costs to get to our destination. **Airfare is currently running about $500 round trip out of LAX. One hundred percent of the humanitarian trip should be tax deductible since it is considered a donation to the Worldwide Child Relief Foundation.

The Worldwide Child Relief Foundation (WCRF) is an IRS-qualified 501(c) non-profit organization, so all donations are tax-deductible. WCRF is a small organization of volunteers and has no paid employees at this time.

If you’re interested in joining us, please send an email to Angie McMillan (angievmcmillan@gmail.com) or call her at 801.413.6814. In the email please indicate how many would be making the trip with you, and any questions or concerns you might have about dates or other details. Once we have a list, we will send out the first payment information (half of the trip cost is due around the beginning of March so we can secure hotel/air reservations and get travel arranged).

Your generous help is appreciated by the Worldwide Child Relief Foundation and the people of Nicaragua.

Sincerely,
Hal Young
