September Nicaragua News Update

In September, the sociopolitical situation in the department of León seems to be returning to normality. In some places more tourists can be seen that are visiting the city and the shopping centers are already operating the normal 8 working hours (in July they were operating only 4 hours). UNAN began classes, but few students have restarted classes because, in reality, even the majority of the population is a little afraid of any abnormal event that could happen. The protests continue but in a more moderated way. For example, this Saturday, September 8, a national strike is scheduled. Not all producers or business owners are in agreement with this strike since the economic situation of everybody worsens with these type of activities. Definitely one of the safest places in practice has been the community of La Calle real. Its inhabitants have been, throughout the course of events that began in May, very calm and each one of them peacefully facing their daily struggle for survival. – Juan Carlos, WCRF Nicaragua Director
