1.Small business development. Two small business projects were started. Nicole taught brick oven baking classes to four people interested in furthering their business prospects. It’s still uncertain what can be developed business wise, but some ideas are in the works. Also, Charity Westra did a hair class for three days, teaching women how to do hair and makeup to run businesses out of their homes.
2. Special needs. Heather Massey, an occupational therapist, visited around 15 families of special needs kids and did evaluations with each one. Write-ups were done on each child so help improve conditions and functionality of the class.
3. Baseball clinics.
4. Values classes. All high school age students received a basic course on the important of values and developing self-reliance. A pilot group was chosen for a longer six week program in self-reliance/success skills for life. That class begins this week.
5. Evaluation of current small businesses. A team of six volunteers visited 5 of the current businesses that have outstanding loans. We met with them and toured the facilities where their businesses are set up.
6. English classes. Three additional English classes were started and participants were registered. The course is still ongoing.
7. Youth council. We reorganized the youth council and redefined the responsibilities of each member.
8. Women’s health and hygiene classes were taught to a group of 100 women at the community center. Also, women’s health classes were taught to all high school age girls at the high school.
9. Teacher training courses. Two teacher training courses were carried out and teachers were all given a bag of supplies to use in their classrooms.
10. Elementary schools. Several classes were taught in the elementary school, and neighboring elementary schools (still under the jurisdiction Professor Joaquin Pedro Solis) were visited and given supplies.
11. Literacy. We met with the literary project leader and set goals to develop and revitalize the reading program. This is just a quick overview of things. Each one of these could be discussed in length and each has some challenges that need follow up. I think the interns are doing a good job addressing some of those things
