Special Needs Children’s Program

Program Update May 2019

Hello Sponsors of the Special Needs class!
I can’t believe how long it has been since my last update.  I am so sorry and promise to be more consistent with my quarterly updates.  The teacher Karla, left to find work in Spain in March.  Her sister, Veronica, has taken over the teaching responsibilities of the class.  It is going great!  Veronica is a teacher at the secondary school and has a gift for teaching.  I am so impressed with how well she is doing.  I thought that Karla was irreplaceable but Veronica is honestly doing an excellent job.  She loves the kids and is teaching them so much.  It is fun to get her reports each week.
In June a volunteer group will be headed down there to work in the community for a week.  There is an occupational therapist going down that will be visiting with the children and their families in their homes.  We also have a new student.  His name is Merlin and he is a young man with down syndrome.  He is so happy to be a part of the class.
Maria Fernanda is working with a tutor several times a week to help her with learning how to read.  She is at the class every week with out fail.
Anthony and Gerald, the 2 young men that received hearing aides need some new batteries.  I am working with the organization that donated them, to get the new batteries that they are in need of.
If you have any questions about the class or about a specific child, please feel free to contact me directly.  The pictures are from the class on Saturday.
Thank you again for your support.  It is such a blessing for these sweet children.  I have loved to see how much they are learning and growing.
Best!

Program Update 2/27/19

The Special Needs class is going great.  The kids are learning and growing and loving being a part of something that is just for them.  This past week the instructor, Karla was able to do a special field trip in which the children were able to go to a small carnival that they do in the village once a year.  The children loved doing the rides and jumping on the trampoline.  They also were able to enjoy some refreshments as part of the day as well.  Karla continues to do an excellent job teaching and loving these sweet children.

Program Description

With the help of generous sponsors from the United States, 12 children with special needs in the community of La Calle Real have the opportunity to attend a weekly educational class at the community center.  Each week they are taught by a local elementary teacher named Karla who loves and cares for these children like her own.  Many of the children attending the class had never had the opportunity to learn in a classroom setting and some had never left their properties before attending the class.  The sponsors have also helped the children in the class get wheelchairs, dental care, glasses and hearing aides.  The children are gaining valuable life skills and confidence as they learn each week.  The smile on their faces says it all.
